One month checkup

This morning, we went to see Dr. Mills, our pediatrician, for Kirby's one month checkup.  That's right, I said, ONE MONTH checkup.  Can you believe that?  He'll be one month in 5 days.  It is hard to believe!!!  I look back fondly on the past 4 weeks, and I also look back on some of my lower moments in life and already have regrets.  It is crazy that something so magical as the arrival of a new baby can be filled with so many conflicting emotions of joy, fear, inadequacies, happiness, and love.  I struggled at first with my desire for schedules and plans, and it took me almost 3 solid weeks to recognize that there is nothing scheduled about this little bundle of joy.  I certainly wish I had recognized this sooner, but better late than never.

today he weighed in a 9 lbs and 15 oz, which puts him in the 50th percentile.  This little guy is clearly eating well and growing at a solid clip.  He was 22 1/4" long, which is the 85th percentile.  I don't know where he has gotten that height....not the Trailovs.  Ha.  Sweet baby had another Hep B shot, and he did NOT like it!  Nothing a little love and a meal from Momma couldn't make better.  You know those times in life when you feel the most accomplished and worthy, I had that moment today.  I was able to comfort the little guy, and it melted my heart.  All those years of wanting to be a momma, and here I am, and I'm getting the hang of it.  Of course, next crying fit he has that I can't seem to calm I'm going to try and remember that feeling I had today.  I wish I could have bottled up that feeling to use on "rainy days".  I guess you could say that I have found that calling I never thought I had found or had.

This week Kirby has begun to really use his eyes and focus on objects and even track us.  It is wild the progress he has even made in the 5 days that Mom and Dad visited.  He has started reaching out at the objects on his play gym, and he seems to enjoy tummy time and even moves his little head from side to side.  He likes to be propped up in the boppy and kick his little legs and punch his arms at the air.  AND I'm feeling that his smile in response to stimulus is right around the corner.  We think we've seen a few here and there.  He is his happiest early in the morning when he plays and soaks in all his surroundings.  He tolerates me reading stories to him, even when I grab his big hand to help him reach out to touch the books.  He's a trooper.  He likes to take walks and LOVES rides in the car in his car seat.  He really is a happy baby, but when he is ready to eat, he is READY to eat, and he will let you know.  My favorite moments are when he has just nursed at night before bed time, and he will allow me to rest him on my chest and rock him before putting him in his crib.  His little head fits right under my chin.  Ahhhhhh, so sweet.

So, that is the one month checkup stats and my editorial.  Thank God for Kirby James.

Now, this momma is going to take the advice everyone offers and try to nap while baby is napping, at least for a little bit!!!
