Happy fifth birthday, big guy!!!

How can this little baby be a five year old big kid?  Not possible????

He had a big birthday!!  He woke up to balloons all over his floor and five big balloons floating in his room.  He says the "magic birthday balloon man" left them in his room...pretty cool the magic that can be created around birthdays!!!  He loved his birthday donut, complete with singing from Mom, Susanna Rose, and special guests Memaw and Pepaw.  He went to school, and Memaw and Pepaw dropped him off and met his teacher, and we all went to his class for a special reading of his favorite book, The Polar Express.  He beamed with excitement, and I loved how he sat there and held my hand and snuggled up to me while Memaw read.  Melt!!!  We had dinner at the Church Fish Fry, where we shared birthday cupcakes with some of our buddies.  I was at a church retreat all weekend so we had his sloppy joe birthday dinner (his request) Sunday night and opened gifts.  Legos were a huge hit this year, and he just about had them all put together by Tuesday.

The Birthday King loves life!!  He smiles and laughs hard, though he is a bit more serious than he was as his giggly baby self.  He loves to play!!  We pretend to be Nature Cat, Elsa (Susanna Rose), Daisy (me), and Hal (Quillen).  He pretends to be Richard the Wolf, and again Susanna Rose is Elsa.  He loves the Minions, and we talk Minion a lot, but it is really hard for Mom to understand that jibberish.  Blaze and the Monster Machines and Nature Cat are his favorite shows right now.  He LOVES leggos, coloring, play doh, and pretending the most.  And I love his taste in music.  Madness by Muse and Pompeii by Bastille are his two favorites right now.  I'm digging his love of British rock right now.  When he's older, I'll be sure to introduce him to some Radiohead and Keen.  He loves his little sister.  He plays so well with her and is really starting to hold her hand and show her the ropes so to speak.  But of course, they are sibblings so they do their fair share of arguing, crying, and just shouting at each other.  He is so inquisitive.  He has so many questions about so many different topics.  He asks about the earth, the solar system, animals, and just the way all things work.  You name it, he'll ask questions about it that will throw you for a loop.  Things I don't have answers for.  And sometimes, your answer isn't good enough for him, and he'll let you know how it is.  He is beginning to sound out his letters and read.  I love to stop in the middle of a story and point to the word and have him sound it out.  C---A---T.  C-A-T.  Cat!  CAT!!!!!  Every time.  And the look of excitement and pride on his face is priceless.  He still loves to read books, and he is a real stickler for routine.  He likes his routine.  He is very compassionate and sweet.  There have been times if I'm sad or just not feeling myself that he has just come up to me and given me a kiss on my head.  That's it.  Just a little pick me up.  He's going to take care of his momma, I know it.  He has learned to pump his legs on the swings, which is AWESOME to this mom.  He's just a kind kid!  Enough sad.  He makes me smile and oh so proud.

So happy birthday to one of the sweetest, coolest kids I know!!!!

I've feeling pretty nostalgic these last few days here in Indianapolis.  So nostalgic that I even forked over my credit card to Bounce U for a big boy birthday party.  Invites to best buds, Ari and Talia; Matthew and Andrew; JackJack, Cameron, and Mallory; Hannah and Raegan; and Anabelle and Vera.  I asked him what he wanted, and true to Kirby of birthdays past, he didn't tell me what gift he wanted, he made his cake request.  I couldn't not make the fish cake happen...just like the "twain cake that puffs" and the "cake that looks like quillen."  Pinterest is keeping me afloat in the mom department. So, I made the cupcakes and the different color icings, and Keith and Mom and I got to work on making our fishy creations.

M&M fishy lips and scales and candy eyeballs.

And Keith took it one step cooler and put all the fishies in the shape of a fishy.  Pretty dang cool!!!  I think he liked it.

The Birthday King and his sister.  They were so excited to start jumping.

Best buddy Ari arrived!!  Kirby was excited to see her.

These kids played till they were dripping with sweat.

And this picture captures the essence of little sister Susanna Rose.  She jumped as high and as far and ran as fast and as hard as all the big kids.  Ain't nothin going to slow this kid down.

He loved his cake.  Nailed it again!!!!

Buds!!!

Sister!!!

Kestner clan.

V!!!

Anabelle

Ari and Talia. Y Buddies.

Cupcakes tasted as good as they looked.  Yay!

"Two cool dudes with K power!!!"

So, here's to hoping he enjoyed his first big boy birthday part as much as we did!  It was a blast.  I feel like I've said it every year, and I'll say it again at the risk of repeating myself, but I have loved age 4.  Here's to 5 and all the awesomeness I know it will bring too.

Kirby, here's to another big year for you, buddy, and it will be a big one!!  We have preschool graduation!  Yay.  We will move to Chattanooga, TN, and be closer to our families.  Yay.  But we will have to say good bye to some of the best buddies we could have made. I feel confident we will burn up i-65 to see them in the future.  And the biggest of all, my good man, is Kindergarten.  You are so excited about it, and I am so excited for you!  I'll miss you and our snuggles and puzzles and games, but you are so ready for this next great phase, and I can't wait to take it with you.  I love you, buddy, all the way to the moon and back.  And I can hear your sweet voice in reply telling me you love me all the way to mars and back.  You got me, buddy!  You got me, you little brainiac, you!!!!
